Teach What You Know

I first heard this phrase while in an online community, "Teach what you know" but rarely did I understand what people met by it. I technically know a lot of different things, so what should I teach? What would be helpful in sharing? Then I hear, you only need to know one more thing in order to teach someone else.

Then the question arises, "what if I'm not good or confident at this one thing?" Or at least this is how I felt in the beginning.

Recently, I've understood this phrase a little differently. As, there's this one thing I've been doing consistently for the past five or so years. That thing? - Paint Parties.

So I went with the flow and followed by intuition and began to teach other people exactly what I knew.

I first began by asking other artists if they would be interested in learning what I had learned. Once people said yes, I invited them to sign up to my landing page. I winged it. I did a live webinar with no slides. I simply shared what I had learned.

I first shared my story of how I began teaching and what my first experience was like.

How I got my first job teaching for another studio.

Then I learned how to teach and train other people to do exactly what I was doing.

Then more people were signing up after I held my webinar. So I decided to break it down even more and make a mini series.

I did another call online for people to join a free webinar asking, Are you interested in learning how to host a successful paint party? Based on the resounding yes, I made an outline based on the feedback I received from this questionnaire.

I broke each lesson down into digestible steps:

  • Introduction, my story, survey results & schedule

  •  tools and materials with a free check list

  •  creating original paintings and stencils plus my favorite stencil tool for large parties

  •  booking and budgeting for events

  •  the best platforms for sales and discovery

  •  hiring assistants and partnering with venues

  •  getting press mentions

  •  live teaching demo and bonus:

  •  how to earn more by asking for tips

Now I am pondering what do I teach next? If I am teaching everything I know, I'd share how I built my website, how I even got into e-mail marketing, and rebranding my business. But I am wondering if I should teach more painting lessons that people are free to use to host their own paint parties?

I decided to survey my audience, and they want me to teach how to build a website. If you’d like your input, sign up for my mailing list.
