Growing Up Haitian (American): Things that are considered rude
So I'm not sure if all these are true, but this is what I've experienced growing up Haitian American and being told I'm being rude. There's never really an in depth reason as to why it's rude - it just is. (If you know why comment below)
- Whistling among adults
- Crossing your legs too high as a woman (above the knee regardless of attire)
- Talking too loud
- Moving out before your married (considered a disgrace as a woman)
- Hopping over someone when their legs are stretched out.
- Not saying yes when offered food/water/drink when visiting someone's home
- Singing among adults
- Play fighting
- Laughing too loud (or awkwardly)
- Goofy-ness
- Not greeting every adult in the room with a kiss
- Waving hi instead of giving a kiss in a room full of adults
- Blowing /chewing gum
- Not singing for the adults (when they asked you to as a kid)
- Not talking on the tapes they would send home (before phones became popular )
- Brooming someone's feet
Not saying being Haitian ain't fun- sometimes they think the oddest things are rude.
