Design Thinking: Deconstructed
A few months ago I reached out to Barrett Brooks via his website and email. I had read through several of his blog posts and even signed up and I noticed that he hadn't written a post in a while. So after signing up I reached out to him through his welcome email asking for advice. I had just finish reading his post on what to do when you think you want to switch day jobs. I typed up my email and hit send.Sending an email to someone you don't know is like taking a deep breath and plunging under water without an air tank - there's no say if you'll hear back from them - or your holding your breath waiting to hear back from them. Grateful enough Barrett did get back to me and he gave me some advice. Advice that I thought I'd be taking to the next level by publishing daily.What was I thinking? Clearly I wasn't. I should have listened. I should have read much more articles, asked for interviews with people around the web, I should have taken notes like a mad woman and just stick to doing 100 posts. But no, I decided I'd blog publicly to "document my journey from here to there, my creative journey to IDEO". By far this is one of the biggest commitments I've made (publicly) and I am determined not to "break the chain" ( I'm using the 'commit' app designed by Nathan Barry).Barrett gave me a list of books to read and so far I have read all of one book. I've got a long way to go on my reading list. Barrett refers to a few people and how they've broken down deconstructing the knowledge needed to become an expertise in a particular field.However the Standford d.School has already broken down the design thinking process:
- Empathize
- Define
- Ideate
- Prototype
- Test
I personally like the outlined framework that is pointed out in Barrett blog by Robert Greene. It includes the idea of empathy. In the book, "Creative Confidence", there are a few challenges listed out and one that stood out to me in part was “Start Designing Your Life”. So I guess its time to experiment.
